Michael is indeed a fine young clarinetist and gentleman. I had the =
pleasure of hearing him as one of the audition committee judges along =
with my colleagues Larry Combs and Alessandro Carbonare.=20

After the competition, Michael, his father and I had a conversation =
discussing orchestral auditions and clarinet playing generally. =
Michael's comments and questions were truly perceptive - belying his =
tender age. Along with the support from family and teachers, there =
seemed to be an ideal recipe for further successes.

The simulated or mock orchestral audition is a newer development at =
the ICA Clarinetfest having been started only 3 or 4 years ago by Dr. =
Raphael Sanders, newly appointed Professor of Clarinet at University of =
Nevada Las Vegas. As a panelist - judge at all of these events, I think =
it can be safely said that the level of playing during this time has =
skyrocketed due largely to the fact that students and teachers have been =
made aware of these auditions - hence more participants and a larger =
pool of talented young clarinetists competing.

The genesis of this entire concept was Dr. Raphael Sanders'. Through =
his hard work and persistence a new opportunity for young aspiring =
clarinetists to learn more about the orchestral world through the ICA =
competition has been realized. Bravo Raphael!
