Subj: [kl] ICA winner -- Shoot the pianist

It's a small world. Somebody on the list was asking who won the
ClarinetFest performance competition. I happened to meet him today at a
master class. I asked if he wanted to give out his email address, and
he replied "Sure, that's fine by me."
So if the person who was asking still wants the email address, I
have it in my wallet now.

It happened that, at the master class, the piano accompanist and
one of the students were sick. So the instructor played for us with a
substitute pianist and no rehearsal. What did he choose to play? The
same Tosca piece (not Saint Saens, that was my error) that Alessandro
Carbonare used as his 'encore' at ClarinetFest. Given the fact that the
pianist was a last minute stand-in, and the class was small and more
relaxed, I commented afterwards to the instructor (Fred Ormand), "Well,
at least you didn't need to shoot the pianist."
I expected that he would ask me what I was talking about; but
instead he replied without hesitation and with a grin, "Yes, I know
Alessandro's encores quite well."

It *is* a small world.
