Since I was the one who mentioned that I have an 8th grader on the Mozart I
thought I would give further explanation.
This particular student is the only student that I did not inherit from
another teacher.
He has been with me for about a year and half. He is the one student who
practices
what I assign and remembers everything I try to teach him. He practices
diligently and
has been in either the 1st or 2nd chair of every band camp and conference
that he has gone
to. His sound, tonguing, and articulation are more mature than most of the
older students
that I have inherited. He has a better sound on his YCL20 than most
students do on there YCL52's.
When he said that he would like to do the 1st Movement, (notice that he
did not pick the 2nd movement because it appeared to easier) I indicated
that I would go over
this with him under certain conditions. The primary one was; if it was
decided that he had
bitten off more than he could chew, we would shelf it until he was
older. He was in total agreement
with this. He was also made to understand that this is a long term
process. We are taking it slowly
and he is learning the phrasing as well as the notes. He is making better
progress than my older
students, frankly. He loves the Clarinet and there is no way that I would
keep him from learning
a great piece like the Mozart unless I saw that it was being counter
productive.
At the rate he is going, I will probably have to refer him to a better
teacher in about a year.
There seems to a society out there that should be called, "Save Brahms and
Mozart from the Children". You
have to pardon me if I don't become a member.
