Your message came through perfectly this time.

<><> I really enjoyed John Manasse. I thought he had a wonderful
sound. No one else has commented on him.

His was another of the magniificent performances, wasn't it? He
didn't adhere completely to the 'classical' style -- as I understand it,
but then I'm certainly no expert. Especially the passages towards the
end where he delivered that haunting melody-from-miles-away-in-the-hills
tone. He knew that he nailed the final runs. Did you see him punch the
2nd violin in the shoulder? I thinik he was apologizing to the lady
afterwards, during the ovations.
One of the attendees commented the next day in the cafeteria that
Manasse did not consent to have his recital sold on ICA's discs. I
didn't look at the list closely enough to remember whether this was true
or not. If true, it surprises me because his performance was among the
most emotive and engaging (IMO), and I would've thought that it would be
in demand -- especially because of the extra flourishes that he added to
the standard (?) performance style.
When Larry Combs was emphasizing that each performer should play
the way that he or she feels, not the way that someone else in authority
demands, I thought of Manasse immediately. He played his own music, not
the editing of some editor.

.....as I told my instructor after the festival was over, perhaps it's
been so long since I've attended a first rate concert in the flesh,
perhaps I'm re-learning what good music is. But while there were some
bloopers and administrative gaffs, the quality of music at ClarinetFest
seemed (to me) to be at a higher level than anything I've hear in many
years, such as Las Vegas showrooms, local concert halls, etc. Cirque du
Soleil used to knock my socks off, but not the recent productions.
Perhaps this is only because I'm trying to play music myself again,
and I'm re-learning how much is required of a performer. But Verdehr,
Walzel, Osborn, Silveira...... when I think about listening to the
likes of Pete Fountain in New Orleans next year, I catch myself yawning
a little bit.... I heard better this year in Oklahoma.
This is probably a foolish thing to say, but it's how I feel.
