I am not a huge fan of clarinet ensemble music, but I have to comment on
two pieces I heard at CF2K. One was Sean Osborn's quartet, played on
Sunday morning. It was made to be played by advanced high school or
college players, and is very clever, both in the use of the sonority of
the 4 Bb clarinets, and the structure and melodic inventiveness of the
movements. It is published by Presser, and I'm going to be ordering a
copy.

Also, earlier in the week Eric Mandat performed his Trio (exact title
forgotten) which was also very clever if a bit long winded. But never
mind - Mandat has provided instructions for players to select any number
of movements desired for performance. The interesting clarinet sonority
is achieved by three performers playing Eb/Bb, Bb, and Bb/Bass parts.
