I really wish that next year's featured recitals are: Ricardo,
Alessandro, and Tom Martin. Could we ever be that lucky? I only hope
so!!!!!

It took me a couple of days to return home to my keyboard, and
perhaps I missed messages on this list about the performances....
....but the jazz (such as Martin) and klezmer (such as Klezmatics)
performances fully deserve their share of ultimate praise.

Without mentioning a name, one of the big name classical performers
couldn't find the correct pitch and messed up the tone so badly that I
stood up twice to leave the auditorium. Fortunately, this particular
person quit playing before I reached the door, and I was able to return
to my seat.
By comparison, the Brazilian jazz and klezmer folks and Firth
showed total control of their instruments, accuracy, compositional sense
and (of course) rhythm that wouldn't quit. They deserved the ovations
that they received.
It happened that I stayed in one of the dorms, and every night all
the other rooms along my hallway fell silent at about 9 PM for fear of
attracting the campus police. But on the night that Paulo Santos
played, I returned to the dorm so hyped up that I was physically aching
to haul out my clarinet and play something.... anything. Of course, it
was 11:30 PM and I knew that it would be impossible for me to do it.
But when I stepped out of the elevator, *EVERY ROOM ALONG THE HALLWAY*
was cranking out fff music of one sort or another, and so I gratefully
did the same. Our hallway didn't shut down until about 2 AM, when some
of us ran out of steam and others of us decided to quit before someone
did decide to call the cops.
Firth happened to stop right in front of me and my instructor and
her 12-yr-old student for a few moments as he made his way down the
aisle, playing his heart out. I don't believe in worshipping idols, but
<expletive deleted>, I will *_never_* forget those few measures.
