Subj: [kl] Another "high" moment

Another of the best moments (for me) at ClarinetFest was the Tokyo
Clarinet Philharmony. I had never heard a clarinet choir before, much
less one who played *so magnificently*, and their formal dress (the
ladies in colorful ball gowns) added to the impact.
But I was surprised that the program committee postponed the Tokyo
group until Sunday, when many of the attendees had already departed. I
jumped to the (apparently incorrect) conclusion that this was done in
order to encourage attendees to remain until the end of the festival.
When I was talking to a Japanese attendee in the cafeteria, she
explained that most likely this was not the reason. She said that it
was a cultural difference. The Japanese do not have extended 'personal
leave' from their employment as we do, and hence (according to this
lady) the Tokyo Philharmony probably choose to perform on Sunday so that
they could do their traveling on Saturday and Sunday night and thereby
not miss so much work.
This lady seemed to know what she was talking about. FWIW.

They *were* magnificent by anybody's standards. They received a
standing ovation after Pictures At An Exhibition, but for me it was the
Wagner Pastorale -- which is all color and mood, not punchy themes, and
therefore (IMO) often butchered. They filled the auditorium with
musical color in at least 6 dimensions.
