The "appoggiaturas" in the duet, as you suggest yourself, are written out. I
think you need to consider the harmonic notes as dotted half notes by
implication, so the appoggiaturas at the beginning are two beats and the
resolution is one beat. Likewise, the eighth note appoggiaturas resolve by
implication to eighth notes, the rests (in both cases) having been written
in to show "correct" articulation for the style.

I always thought that, to be completely accurate, the term "appoggiatura"
referred to non-harmonic tones resolving downward only, and that the
upward-resolving ones in the seventh measure of the duet had another name (I
remember maybe "retardation," although I've never heard that name outside of
theory class and always thought it strange there was no Italian term for
it).

In any case, the duet is an illustration of playing style and seems to be of
no help in interpreting appoggiatura _notation_.
