Prior to that (1556) were exclusive contracts with the state:
Ottavia dei Petrucci, 1498, exclusive 20 year contract to print & sell
music for lute, organ and voices throughout the Venetian Empire granted
by the Signoria de Venice (The Norton/Grove Handbooks in Music - Music
Printing and Publishing, edited by Krummel & Sadie, p. 20. ISBN
0-393-02809-7. This book is to music publishers what the New Langwill is
to wind instruments)
The book makes interesting reading - music publishing was one of the
first if not the first area of mass publications granted "copy rights",
with both state and church granting publishers the rights to different
editions.
