My teacher has a DB-66, and I like it a lot. The flaws you mentioned can
be overcome, but the ways of doing so are not too obvious. To change temp=
o
settings more quickly than one digit at a time, first push and hold the
button that goes the direction you want to go (for example, if you want
to lower the tempo, push and hold the down button). Then, still holding
that button, push and hold the other button (up in this case). It will go=

very fast. If you want to go slower, just release the second button. It
sounds much harder than it actaully is, and it is explained much better
in the instruction manual that comes with the metronome. Also, the Dr Bea=
t
will sound an A-440. This is done by pushing two other buttons simultaneo=
usly...I
don't remember which ones they are, but this is also explained in the ins=
truction
manual. Of course, if you want to avoid all these lunatic combinations,
you could try the DB-88. I personally use the DB-88, and it corrects all
these flaws. Changing tempo is done by turning a dial and can be done as
quickly or slowly as you want. It can sound any tone from C2 to B6. It al=

stores your settings (tempo, beat divisions, number of beats per bar, etc=
.)
in 8 different programmable channels, so you only have to push one button=

to get there. The only problem is, as you said, portability. About the on=
ly
case it will fit in is the ProTec "carry-all" case with that puch thingy
on top. But if you don't mind a slightly awkward shape, the DB-88 is grea=
t.
A bit pricey though...around $160 I think.
