Laurie,

My understanding of the "long appogiatura" is that it takes half the
duration of the following note, unless the following note is dotted
("pointed?"), in which case it is 2/3 of that note's duration. Thus a
long appogitura preceding a quarter note would be played as "eighth -
eighth", while the same preceding a dotted quarter would be played "quarter
- eighth". In each case, the first note should have a slight stress.

It would also appear that the notation practice is approaching (at least)
using a slashed small note for a grace note, while the unslashed small note
denotes the long appogiatura. But this practice is very inconsistent, to
say the least.

Anyone else have different views?

George
