Say what? I went back and read Tony's article, "Metaphors for
Articulation"; that was a good suggestion, Ann. Anyway, it all makes so
much sense. Simply enjoying making music out of the piece cannot be lost in
all the work, or it won't be worth it to bother to even go to grad school.
I read the "Suffering Artist" portion of the Steinmetz article, as well. I
know people like that, and it is really sad. Thanks for helping me see
that, no matter what happens, I don't ever want to lose the joy I find in
making music. Of course, I am somewhat perverted, as I enjoy it when a
teacher or colleague points out my mistakes - there's something in that
learning process there...guess it's my 42 years showing.
And I have worried about being judged by my age rather than my playing
ability by the auditioners. But what has gone before was worth it - I grew
and changed in ways that have enhanced me as a musician, and have kept me
from quitting, as well. (Not to mention that no one outside music will hire
me anyway - guess I just don't fit into the corporate scheme).
Okay, time for bed. I hope I can park the kiddies in front of the telly
tomorrow for a little bit so I can practice.
Patty
...who is a happier and much more grateful musician now
