The "waftiness" is exactly what I was finding frustrating in my own playing.
The odd thing is I recall wondering why, a lot of times, many college
students sounded pretty much the same on every piece they played, regardless
of the composer, period and other relevant data concerning the selection. I
wonder no longer. Sometimes I think this "waftiness", like excess body
movement and other habits, is basically a learned affectation that students
think will make them seem more sophisticated musically than they really are.
At least that was the case with me, if I remember correctly. I do know that
in my studies for may years, even with David and other fine teachers, I have
avoided Mozart and Weber and Stamitz like the plague and the phrasing was
probably a good part of that.
I also searched out "All that Stuff About the Diaphragm" and it is immensely
helpful, just as you said. (Ran copies, I did.) Mitchell Lurie told me
once, while helping me to prepare Stravinsky's Three Pieces for an audition,
to "just play". It still makes sense. Again, I tend to be like many people
and simply think too much. If I don't stop, I may hurt myself <g>.
