I teach instrumental to many 9 yr olds. I find that if you are
enthusiastic about the next piece of cool music they get to play and
sing and clap all the music first, kids will love anything. Beethoven
#9 symph is the overall favourite although
supercalafragalisticexpialadocious - comes a pretty close second.!!!
When we do Mr Beethoven we look at pictures of the silly hair wigs and
we also try dancing. If you do the ear on the piano game to show how
MrB composed when deaf the kids think he is just the best! As a aside
- I also like to include songs from Dysney ie: Winnie the Poo or Under
the Sea (from little mermaid) because then the weeks homework includes
watching the video of said cartoon and listening to the music. They
practice these songs However difficult HEAPS!!!! Also the Pokemon CD
has helped a number of not-quite-as-enthusiastic kids to discover the
joy of practicing. And it is a great tonguing exercise!!!
Good luck with your flute student.
