Subj: [kl] Ornamentation in chamber music

I've just played K581 in the Oxford Chamber Music Festival with a
wonderful young pickup quartet led by the excellent Isabelle Faust. We
did some, though not much, ornamentation.

Now, obviously, if I ornament, then the first violin ornaments too.
But, how about the others?

When we went down this road in the Nash Ensemble on a US tour a few
years ago, there came a point where it started to get a bit silly -- or
so I thought. One of the 'best' among many moments was when the
'cellist decided at the last moment to put the final E of his solo in
the second trio of K581 up the octave, in a flamboyant gesture that had
us practically rolling about on stage in the concert. And as you can
imagine, there's lots of scope for 'improvements' in, say, the viola
part;-)

(I remember Virginia Benade was in the audience for that particular
concert with the high E. I forgot to ask her afterwards what she'd
thought about the 'free' quality of our efforts.)

Is this authentic behaviour?
