Until the Feist Publications vs. Rural Telephone Services case in the US
Supreme court, "sweat of the brow" works were presumed to be copyrightable,
thus the copyrights on the bible and lots of PD music - presentation &
editing were held to be the copyrightable elements. Feist changed the whole
copyright arena when it comes to the publishing of facts (and PD works).
Facts aren't copyrightable in the US, but a novel or unique way of
presenting them is (or can be). Editing and typography are not considered
novel or unique.
