I don't think anyone has yet mentioned what I think is the major effect (or
side-effect) of mouthpiece cushions. They modify the way you hear your own
sound. At one extreme is a double-lip embouchure, with, I presume,
practically no bone conduction of sound to the ears. At the other extreme
lies teeth directly on the mouthpiece. Somewhere in between, depending on
their thickness and softness, are the mouthpiece cushions. It really makes a
difference to how your tone sounds to you. When trying out a lot of
mouthpieces I use bits of electrical tape to keep my teeth from marring the
mpcs, and because the tape is thinner than my usual Bay Vibra-Ease cushion, I
hear a brighter, louder tone.
