And you find that there's no CD-ROM readers around anymore - the format's changed ...

Yes, you can (hopefully, if the maker hasn't put any onerous copy-defeating program on the disk) copy the disk if new formats arise - but you need to _remember_ to copy them, and you need to be able to run the reader program, too.

Digital is still evolving at a rapid rate; I'm not convinced that it's the right media for medium-term storage. Long term is still unknown, and short term is fine.
