Tony, back when you posted on this topic, I appreciated everything you
wrote. I still do. This approach makes so much more sense, that doing a
whole number of things to a reed before ever sticking it on the mouthpiece
and seeing how it plays for me. I always play the thing first.
One thing does come to my mind, as I teach beginning and intermediate
students: I show them how to make adjustment using a tin piece of fine
grained sand paper, as reed knives are expensive tools, and could even be
confiscated as a weapon in some of our high schools here if a student were
to forget and take it to school! (A shame, but so true.) I am interested
in what other teachers of beginners and intermediate students teach their
students concerning reed adjustment.
