I for one certainly hope it happens sooner - the storage of music on
computer disk and the electronic transfer of same, vis printed music.
There is a lot of old music that is fun to play and definitely worth keeping
in archives; I came across a great deal of it while serving as Band
Librarian a few years ago with Navy Band San Diego (now Navy Band
Southwest). I was consolidating holdings from three or four separate
libraries and actually did more playing than sorting sometimes. The point
is, when storage is done on hard disk, this music will be available for
posterior, without worry about dry rot and fading, etc. It made me sad to
think of losing a lot of this stuff. If nothing else, it amazed me to see
what composers considered the clarinet capable of. Kept me practicing
scales, thirds, fundamentals in all keys...BTW, I kept some of the
borderline copies I was authorized to throw away. Hope the government
doesn't come after me. Unauthorized clarinet music...
