I don't suppose that this episode qualifies but it does bring up
interesting questions about the risks of public performance. A few years
ago our big band was playing for an open air New Year's concert. I jumped
up to do a solo on my Selmer Mark VI bari. The trombonist behind me,
attempting to be helpful, pulled back the chair to give me more standing
room. Unfortunately, the rear chair legs were now on the end of the
platform. When I sat back down, I went over back wards into the bone
section. Of course I thrust my horn up out of harms way as much as possible
while it was attached to its harness. Gouged my Dukoff mouthpiece with my
teeth, but the horn was OK. My shoulder, however, suffered a glenoid labrum
tear and is still not the same, although it is slowly improving.
I guess the moral here is that one can trust even well-intentioned
trombonists to do the wrong thing and one should perhaps consider whether
damage to oneself or one's horn is more important. Those of you who own a
Mark VI will know that I still can't decide if I did the right thing.
