I think that you are correct that these sorts of things will happen, and I
would expect them sooner rather than later. In not too many years, if a
high school orchestra, band or jazz band buy an arrangement or
composition, what they will get will be a computer disk, more likely a CD
or CD-ROM. The disk will be a LOT more expensive than buying the paper
copy is today, because publishers will have given up trying to be
copyright police, and they will want to collect all their royalties up
front. So the purchase of the CD will include the right to make unlimited
copies. Therefore, if the tenor saxophonist of limited intellect, who was
referred to in an earlier message, happens to lose his music, it will be a
rather simple matter to print out another copy.

BTW, tomorrow at our town's July 4 festivities and fireworks, I'll be
playing in two organizations - bassoon in the Evansville Philharmonic
Orchestra, and tenor saxophone in the Evansville Concert Band. It's going
to be 90 degrees, very humid, something between 25,000 and 100,000 people
crowded into one space, and I have three and a half hours of playing and
about the same amount of performing to do - and all the music consists of
nearly perpetual loud playing. But, hey, we all have to suffer for our
art, don't we. ;-)
