There are a number of editions of this march. There are arrangements for
younger bands, for mature college bands and all levels in between. Some have
a few mistakes. In the one our orchestra is playing tomorrow for the 4th of
July fireworks, the second clarinetist noticed the first measure of the
breakstrain was left out of her part. Those are publishers errors. Maybe in
a more recent printing, that publisher might correct the error. Some
publishers print an errata sheet with the errors. We all come across
printers errors from time to time. I have found several measures of a piece
not transposed for trumpet. Sometimes the error is only in the part,
sometimes it is in the part and the score, and occasionally it is just in the
score and the part is right. As musicians we find them, do what we have to
do to play it right, and know there will others in other selections.
Sometimes people contact the publishers and make them aware of the error, but
depending on the age of the arrangement, they might already know and have
made the necessary changes on subsequent printings. If you correct it on the
part, the next player who plays it will be appreciative.
