So far all my experiences have been pretty good. I would suggest not
spending more than you can afford to write off (something like gambling).
I have tried not to get emotional or personal about the items- I don't bid
more than I think it would be worth in the worst case senario and I don't
bother if there is no picture. There are certainly good as well as bad
sellers (and buyers). Be sure to check feedback but be aware that it
doesn't always tell the whole story. Be sure you ask any questions you may
have (and save the responses) before you bid. One of the news shows
recently did a report on internet auction fraud and it appears that we
should be at _least_ as careful as at a flea market. There was a highly
rated seller who was fencing stolen property! I doubt that you'll find many
willing to give you your money back unless there are special circumstances.
