I was traveling recently and dropped in on a friend, and just for fun we
stumbled our way through K. 622 with my friend on the piano part in Bb. I had
to read his Simeon Bellison edition (referred to by Dan), and found the
constant crescendo/decrescendos and "funny articulations" quite disconcerting
and hard to ignore. I had to restrain myself from making comments about my
host's choice of edition.

I guess the problem is that these markings on the page are only the crudest
sort of approximation of what it takes to make real music. Probably to Mr.
Bellison they made sense as a shorthand for how he played a phrase, but as
the inverse of Tony's example, I think you could also follow the markings to
the letter and still make it unmusical (completely aside from the question of
18th century performance practice).
