In this country, at least, one is instilled with the moral necessity of
owning one's own piece of real estate. Now that I own a house, it's dawning
on me how silly this actually is. It amounts to a great deal of work,
fraught with peril.

My fence needs painting (actually staining, in a particular shade that only
my wife can describe). Apparently, it's not just a matter of splattering
some of the stuff on with a brush. Oh no . . . one must "prepare" the fence
for staining. And the marketers are very quick to tell us that such
preparation is *always* best done with a power tool.

. . . which gets me somewhat to the point. While pressure-washing my fence,
I somehow managed to pressure-wash my right thumb. It is MIGHTY clean right
now. It's also bright red, and about 25% larger than its normal size. And
I have a gig tomorrow night.

I thought that this was perhaps the stupidest thing I have ever done. Upon
reflection, however, I realized that it's not - with a neckstrap and a
couple of band-aids, I'll be good to go tomorrow night. I wonder, however,
how many of us have anecdotes about pre-performance self-mutilation. Please
do tell - I will feel better!
