!I have always oiled my instrument with the sweet almond oil mentioned by S.
!Hammond. My instrument of choice is a Buffet RC purchased back in 1976.
!Even after oiling the bore eventually will dry out somewhat with age and
!repeated swabbings. My tech who works only on clarinets suggested sending
it
!to someone he knows who does a hot oil treatment. The instrument (minus
keys
!and posts) is immersed in a heated (I don't know how hot) oil for a week.
He
!said the ones that have come back have been great. They are like a new
!instrument. The overall response is better and the bore is like new. I
saw
!one that was done and it looked and played like a new instrument. I will
let
!you know how mine plays when it comes back. Of course it will also be
!repadded with cork on the top and strabinger pads on the bottom and any
play
!taken out of the keys so that alone will make a difference. I am looking
!forward to getting it back the first week in July.

Here in the great Northeast, to oil or not to oil the bore of your horn has
almost always been a sore subject between instructors. I must be living
right... I put my horn down in 1988 (due to demands of the job I held at the
time.) I've gotten it out of its case a few times recently (when I'm not in
one of my depression phases. Ah, the joys of being manic-depressive and
diabetic.), and I have yet to see any sign of cracking. A classmate of mine
had her horn for 1 semester when we were freshmen in college, and it cracked
on her just before her 1st semester jury exam. That was almost 25 years
ago. I'm beginning to think that a professional instrument is like a
computer: If something doesn't crack within the first few months (similar
to a 48 hour burnin on a computer (Information Technology is why I gave up
the instrument, although lately I'm sore tempted to going back into music
full time)) its not going to crack.
