Yes, I use that option also. It all depends on tempo, notes before and
after, where else doubled and so forth.

Had a student last year that only knew the one finger F#, and i strongly
encouraged her to learn the side fingering for chromatic scale.
Then in the audition piece for next year band, the best fingering for a
passage was the switch thumb F natural to 1st finger F#.

She had a BIG grin when i pointed out that she had a head start on that
passage, to balance out the amount of work it took to learn the side F#.
