After Lelia's second response, which surprised me -- though I now see it
shouldn't have -- I think I have to fill in the detailed background to
all of this.
<snip>

One of the most instructive and entertaining things about this list is the
number of ways in which a single seemingly straightforward posting can be
interpreted by recipients in different hemispheres and/or on other sides of
the Pacific/Atlantic. I always read and immensly enjoy Tony's Pay's postings
& I frequently wonder whether they're partly public argument(s) with himself
since he'd be hard put many equally erudite protagonists - occaisional
contrary(butions) from Dan Leeson excepted, of course.
Not so long ago, in response to something about K622, I posted a message
containing a gushing but absolutely sincere appreciation of Tony Pay's
recording, now about 10 years old, of K622. I said that that I thought that
it was a bit too closely recorded because I could hear key and breathing
noises on my CD reissue. Strangely these were absent on an LP version
acquired much earlier.
- except that I *didn't* say those things in those terms.

I said I thought that the CD recording was a bit closely MICE-(d), since it
allows the listner to hear mechanical and breathing noises. (And because in
English, "C" can be soft or hard ("K") and miCrophone is spelt with a C).
Of course the few responses have all focussed on the MICE (Ha,limp bloody
Ha!), not the real issues which were (1) whether the masters were reprocessed
for CD and (2) what everyone thought about virtues or otherwise of very
close recording. (I don't think I like it, but it is probably quite
appropriate for specific pieces. Certainly performers of Tony Pay's calibre
can't be disadvantaged.
Tim.
