Bill's experience must be pretty universal. I have been playing (trying to
learn) for about 18 months now, and have done much the same , changing reeds
and mouthpieces and ligatures. I think that as beginners we wish to pass the
blame for our shortcomings on our equipment rather than accept that good tone
and skill are acquired by effort over a period of time longer than we want to
accept. New bits of paraphernalia allow us to blame "slow" progress on
equipment change, and ease the acceptance of it. But the exploration is all
part of the pleasure of clarinet playing, is it not?
