I read a statement in a book published in London a very long time ago - in
the year 1586, to be precise. It had nothing to do with the clarinet, but
I think this might be applicable to the present question. The statement
was, "There ought to be something between staring and stone blind!" In
clarinet terms, there ought to be something between "bunched chin" and
"biting on the reed." In fact, there is a whole spectrum of degrees of
firmness of the embouchure. Perhaps it might not be out of order to
suggest that the embouchure one uses on the smaller clarinets might be
closer to one end of that spectrum than the one used on the larger
clarinets.
