I played this in the trio version this past season at the CBC's Glenn
Gould Studio, and I really wanted to get the low Eb in the (originally
trombone) lick. I found the paper center of a paper towel roll,
experimented 'til I found the right length, cut grooves into one end and
folded them in to taper the shape, and there it was, a softer but
serviceable low Eb. Trick was I had to balance it between my knees and jam
it in just before the lick!

I painted the tube insert red and drew little devil's heads and dollar
signs etc.(from the text of L'histoire) and worked this magic device into
my spoken introduction of the piece. Audience loved it, I almost forgot to
take it out after!
