I have a large number of Eb clarinets in my collection of woodwinds. A
few play (*). Earlier instuments have a sweeter, less piercing sound.
The finest clarinet I have ever owned, now in the Detroit Symphony, was
a Buffet D clarinet. A much different sound than my modern Buffet and
Selmer Ebs, more of a C clarinet sound. Eb really should NOT be used
for D clarinet in Mahler, Strauss and Stravinsky, they do sound
differently.

Curiously, the French military band reorganization in 1861 set up a
standard band of:
2 flutes/piccs
2 oboes
4 Eb clarinets
2 Bb clarinets
2 each of saprano, alto, tenor and baritone Saxophones
and a lot of brass and percussion.

This is the only standard ensemble I am aware of that used more Eiffers
than Beefers. I would love to try some of their arrangements.

I am willing to sell those marked $$, but please write privately and
wait until I return from vacation July 18.
