My grandparents bought it for my aunt new. It has come to me exactly as it
was bought. Or at least that is the story they are telling me. I have had
the horn since the early 80's when I began to play. I'm the second owner of
it. I suppose it is possible that a dealer sold it as new when it
wasn't, or something along those lines. No way at this point to know if the
dealer was reputable or not. We are talking probably nearly 30 years ago or
so.

How about: some previous owner cracked the barrel, and went out and bought
any old new one (or Daddy did). Then it didn't play too well, so s/he got
rid of it.
