I think we still get the cheap end of the woodwind deal even with all these
horns. An industry standard set of R-13s are still slightly under $4,000/with
silver plated keys. A brannon Bros., or Burkart -Phelan flute is just around
$10,000.00. A Fox 601 bassoon 16,000. A loree oboe 4-5000. Plus and English
horn. My point is this most of the people who play these instruments buy them
long before they have a job that would help them afford it. I think once the
Beohnm clarinet came into use it became much easier to play in all the keys,
A few of the companies were making Low Ebs on the Bb clarinet so you could
play 'A' parts. I think on early Albert type clarinets it was much harder to
access extreme keys. There are some tonal nuances that I think are available
with these other instruments. Tom Puwalski
