Well, I think that a really good clarinetist can make them sound different
and identical whenever necessary according to his/her needs at the time.
In any case, I think the real reason is that it's simply not economically
feasable for clarinetists these days to own an Eb AND a D AND a C AND a Bb
and an A etc...some have a hard time just getting the basic pair, and
after that, it's a toss up between a big stick or a little stick, and THEN
you start aiming for the slightly more obscure instruments. The only
people who I know can afford to purchase all those instruments can mainly
do so because they also don't have a family to support.

I for one would really like to get married, and if it means I don't get to
buy a bass clarinet in A, then so be it! *laughs*
