May I add to Mark's remarks
I am addressing mostly the American clarinet community
whom, when New Grove, Grove V and Slonimsky/Baker
to which they have easy access, fail to deliver,
should be in the market looking for, or acquiring
Waldo Seldon Pratt's New Encyclopedia
of Music and Musicians 1924, whose worth
cannot be under-estimated! Every one should have Pratt
Also Wier and Thompson are good. All three are American.
Those living is parts of the world where
English is not the lingua franca will be forgiven
(by me at least) for enquiries that require
reference works to which they have no access.

I did not/would not respond (for example) to the US clarinet student
who "announced" that he was going to play the Copland Concerto
and wanted to know if the composer was alive or dead. Tut, tut.
