Opus, operis: Latin noun for work, works,
workmanship, building, book, siegeworks, business
First used with reference to musical composition
in 1477 by Tinctoris and in the "modern" sense to
number works by Viadana in Venice in 1597
Opus numbers cannot be relied on as evidence of
chronological order......
[Opera, operae Latin for exersion, work service,
care, attention, a workman
