The biggest problem is that ear protection devices are needed at all. This
is a relatively recent problem that orchestra musicians need this more as a
role than an exception at work. It has become a trend in orchestras to play
louder and louder over the years and nobody can explain why. If I remember
correctly what Jay Friedman, principal Trombone of the Chicago Symphony,
said during a lecture with our orchestra (Royal Stockholm Phil.), he had a
theory that conductors have stopped to interfere with loudness because they
don't want to loose work. I basically agree. Conductors are never as polite
as when they ask you to play softer. Jay has taken the responsibility
himself and never let his section play louder than a cultivated ff if needed
(Is this true Greg? How's your ears by the way? ;-)). It was great to hear
from a Trombone player of Jay's caliber to speak about the horrors of too
loud orchestras.
