Jost Michaels was born in Hamburg in 1922
His first music lessons were from his mother,
the composer Ilse Fromm-Michaels
(she wrote a wind quintet and a Largo
for clarinet and string quartet
in the style of Wagner/post Reger)
He can be heard playing the Berger Piano Quintet
on MDG 308 0508. He also studied the clarinet and violin
He became first clarinet of the Goettingen City Orchestra in 1942
and later joined the Northwest German Radio Orchestra 1945
In 1950 he was appointed a lecturer, later professor in piano, clarinet
and chamber music at Detmold Hochschule
He has toured the world extensively as conductor and solo clarinettist
and has served on the juries of many competitions.
