I hope I'm not butting in. Ed is right, but I would like to add a bit to
what he has said.

A piece of cane tubing is initially much thicker from the outer bark to the
inside radius of the tube than what is ever used in making a single or a
double reed. The wood immediately beneath the bark is the hardest of the
"white" material. The white material gets progressively softer toward the
center or inside radius of the tube.

If a reed blank is made thick, the material closest to the tip will be
softer than the material toward the back of the reed. This is relative to
the intrinsic hardness of the wood piece in question.

The scheduled profile of single reeds (or double reed "sticks" which might
be cane processed to a specific thickness, a particular profile or vamp and
having certain side to side dimensions) can also vary a great deal. A reed
can be cut with more or less "heart."

The variables go on and on. If I knew all of the variables and could control
them I could be more lucid in what I've stated above.
