Actually, the V12 is simply made from a thicker blank. Measured with a
micrometer, they are thicker in some areas of the vamp, and thinner in
other areas than a Vandoren Traditional reed. The thickness of the blank
affects the density of the cane, plus, the back area of the vamp (by the
bark) will be thicker. These two things will affect the body and depth
of the sound.
I think that by "longer facing," they are implying longer and relatively
close. Gigliotti, who was one of the principal testers of these reeds,
plays on a very long, close facing (1.00 or so by 38 or more.) However,
I've heard some people sound great on them while playing short, open
facings. If they play well for you, don't bother reading the box.
