Subj: [kl] gortex pads
Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 14:22:15 -0400

I tried to get ahold of some and had trouble locating a
source. (2 yrs ago). Breathable pads, in this context,
does not mean that air passes readily but that water does.
I am not exactly sure why that is an advantage, but I have
yet to hear of anyone who used gortex pads and didn't think
they were as good as fish skin, leather, cork, etc. That
said, they were very expensive and they were produced in a
very limited range of sizes -- perfect for many modern
models but problematic for the vintage metal clarinets that
I like to work on.

If anyone finds a source that has 1/2 mm sizes please post
that information. (Or even a limited selection for less
than a buck a pad.)

cheers
jim lande
