Thickness doesn't necessarily indicate anything about stiffness.
Stiffness is primarily a quality of the cane.

At some point, early in our careers as woodwind players, we have all
scraped a reed in order to try to make it vibrate more freely. Since this
scraping makes the reed thinner, we make the (unsubstantiated) assumption
that thinness @-----. Actually, these qualities
are more likely a function of the vibratory characteristics of the cane
to greater degree than is the thickness of the cane.
