I suspect that neither of us are musical historians... I'm
certainly not. But we _should_ remember that what we know today as
'classical' music is the small amount of music that was good enough to
be remembered. Do either of us know what we would've heard on a daily
basis back then while shopping in the local village marketplace or
tavern? Probably some awful stuff, and not many Handels tootin' a horn
in the local tavern.
