Me too! - The de Peyer/Maag recording was one of the few (possibly the only)
one readily available (here, in Australia) when K622 was compulsory study on
the 6th Grade music syllabus. I grew up with it and - rationally or
otherwise- it remains permanently imprinted. Someone else on the list (?
Leila Loban) suggested that there aren't any really BAD
interpretations/recordings of K622 & I agree. I now own a few dozen of them
on CD alone, including a reissue of the "fabulous" (in USA parlance)
Marcellus/CSO version, an historic (1942) recording by Reginald Kell with
Malcolm Sargeant conducting, a very recent version by Sabine Meyer/Abbado
(1999) and one with Sharon Kam as soloist - all acquired within the last 12
months.
Each has its own merits although I'm still searching for any in the Kell
version. I have the Kell Brahms repetoire on LP and enjoy it, but his
interpretation of K622 seems bizarre to me - preconditioned by de Peyer's
version - (AND the tuning of the strings is very approximate).
Tony Pay's version is absolutely wonderful although my CD (but not LP)
reissue seems to be so closely miced that some key noises (with only 5 or 6
keys!) are irritating. As someone else recently mentioned, his phrasing and
articulation are unequalled. I particularly like the "chugging" sound of his
low reg arpegios in the 1st movt. How he manages to play so beautifully on
an 18th century instrument is a source of constant wonder & envy. (Sorry, I
seem to have digressed from the original thread, whatever it was).
