Conductors conducting solos

Not many conductors know enough about wind instruments, to be
sympathetic to the breathing problems.

One difficult solo in this respect is the opening of Sibelius Symphony
Number 1.
The clarinet plays the solo, with maybe a soft drum roll.

We did it once at the Symphony and the guest conductor decided to
conduct it.

That would have been all right if he would have allowed enough time for
breathing.
He went through it with complete disregard.

I was lucky to get to the last note without exploding for lack of
relaxed breathing.

The second night, I didn't watch him at all.

He was mad. But who was doing the breathing and playing?
