As someone who has had absolutely no experience whatsoever in a
band or orchestra except for 3 weeks in a community band when --
(hindsight) -- it was much too early for me to attempt playing with
other people -- I must confess that I am astounded that conductors are
not universally respected.

I say this in a spirit of true surprise and confusion, not as a
criticism of any kind.
