Mahler's 1st is when I actually came up with my brilliant idea of thinking
like a violist. Love those schalltrichter passages!! Hurt my neck, though!

After years of transposing C parts, I got a C clarinet (see the archives
for a discussion of the sound quality - I'm not getting lazy!!). Last
month we played Mahler 1, which has long passages in C, including the
entire last movement. I actually made entrances several times,
transposing up a step on the C clarinet - old habits die hard. I guess
I've found a new mantra -

"written notes"
"written notes"
"written notes"...
