One of the Hollywood film cliches is a well-to-do gentleman in
relaxed but luxurious clothes, sitting alone in his English-style
drawing room with dark mahogany bookcases and the lights dimmed, smoking
a cigar and savoring the best cognac, and listening to opera.
The intent, of course, is to contrast the isolated and introverted
room with the expansive 'how-wonderful-it-is-to-be-alive' voice of the
opera singer.
This morning, one of the news channels interviewed a wealthy man who
has paid several million dollars to take a ride in orbit around Earth.
The reporter asked this fellow, "Why?" The fellow had a long list of
reasons, but near the top was that he loves opera, and what could be
grander than to listen to opera with the entire planet at your feet?
Yet if you think about it, it's going to be exactly the same
cliche.... one man alone, thousands of miles away from humanity, sealed
in a cocoon that even air molecules cannot penetrate, a recorded voice
floating in a black and lifeless vacuum....
